The purpose of this activity is to develop discussion and thinking skills in a scaffolded environment. I will check this periodically throughout the holidays to scaffold any discussion.
Rules for posting:
1. Use English Language in the discussions at all times. This facilitates understanding and improves your writing skills.
2. Be clear in stating your question or response by giving the context.
3. Be polite; do not put others down, and do not discount any ideas. If you agree of disagree with another student's idea, state your opinion and justify it. (Click "Read More")
XX: "For Q1, I am not sure if the answer is (a) or (b). Chlorine atoms can be either isotope chlorine-35 or chlorine-37, so this definitely contributes to the fraction value of the mass number, yet it seems that proportions or natural abundance is important. Could someone please enlighten me? "
(Note that the post states the Question, and the author explains his/ her confusion. He/ she then politely requested for assistance.)
YY: "Hi! I agree with XX that the existence of different isotopes can lead to the fraction value of the mass number, but if the natural abundance is 50:50 for chlorine-35 to chlorine-37, then the mass number would just be 36. Therefore, a better reason for it being 35.5 is precisely because of the natural abundance being a 75:25 for chlorine-35 to chlorine-37."
(Note the partial agreement with XX - this is Rule 3. YY also gave an example given to prove his point, which is Rule 2.)
XX: "Thank you very much"
(This is Rule 3)
